Babylon Heights @ Blue Room (CommonPath Exclusive!)
Last week, my friend kept raving about how much he loved the show Entourage. To get him to shut up, I began watching the DVD and I quickly learned two things: these characters are extremely douchey and they are all way too tall. Thankfully The Blue Room has put on a pint-size, Great Depression-laced version of Entourage known as Babylon Heights. Theatre veteran Winston Colgan makes his directorial debut in this tale revolving around the infamous “midget” actors in the Wizard of Oz.
To answer your first question, there are not that many dwarf-actors in Chico. So to accomplish this feat, the set pieces were built much bigger to give the illusion of dwarfism: bigger beds, glasses, suitcases, dressers, etc. Speaking of dressers, the actors had interesting moments in which the quickly built drawers simply would not open. During one instance, Colgan went to the back of it and kicked it open, with the up-most seriousness of his character of course.
3rd Annual Samhain Celebration
3rd Annual Samhain Celebration @ Blue Room (11/01)

As I was perusing one of the local college newspaper’s review of Rocky Horror, I was reminded of my own personal rules: don’t review an annual play. It’s awkward and the review always pretends that no one has ever seen the show before; which if it’s a yearly event, then obviously somebody’s watching! But, as your humble critic, I’m afraid that even I have to break my own rule.

Reservoir Dolls @ The Blue Room
Reservoir Dolls cover story
The year was 1992; the USSR was beginning to collapse, Art Spiegelman's Maus hit store shelves, Jay Leno took over Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” and first-time director Quentin Tarantino released the film Empire Magazine dubbed, “The Greatest Independent Film of All Time”: Reservoir Dogs. The film has gone down in history as a true cult classic and its quotes can be heard many a nights in the backroom of Duffy’s. And it was about 12 years ago when Erika Soerensen had the original idea to adapt the film for the stage. Erika explains how many nights she watched Reservoir Dogs and loved every minute of it. She soon had a strange idea: what if the gender-roles were reversed and the women were the ruthless robbers and murderers? And so, Reservoir Dolls was born.
DADDY
I want to go to Chikoko's Elemental SOOO bad but am not going to be able to find a babysitter...I know it. It's so not happening.
I need older kids or more Grandma's or something.
I always miss Chikoko and I just want to support them. They're locals like me! Real locals! That takes major support-priority for me and I don't think I can make it...again.
I'm thinking about bringing them. Maybe we'll just bring them so Coleman can watch all of his girlfriends bring the sass on the runway.
The smoke settles in the valley
me
the cat bats at my nightgown
lying black and dark upon the sheets
as the wolves in hills not far
deplore to the night sky
the death of a mother, brave and young.
and the cat stares at me, eyes round
surely moons in this bare-lit room.
you
and oh how the smoke settles in the valley!
you lie in bed at night, eyes watering

Chico Electronic Revolution?
"Oh my God," came out of my lips about 10 times last night at the electronic music CAMMIES showcase. I was so totally impressed by everybody's compositions.
Weston came hard with a crazy track that was full and lusciously pounding with his trademark perfect production prowess. For those who saw his set, that 3rd one...you know what I'm talking about.
Ayrian sat quietly and shocked everybody with his secret mean-ass angry pounding dub inspired jams. One had a harmonica. His last track made me want to break things - or breakdance.
