Values are not intrinsic to being. Therefore, value is given through interpretation. Engagement in the world presents a source of meaning and through our focused engagement we find meaning in things that are relevant to our own experiences. That is, when we categorize and process things to create our own meanings, relevant to our existence. This is the existentialist theme of absurdity on which I base my artwork.
The images I select to juxtapose are linked by a relationship I find between them. This relationship may be symbolic, functional, or figurative. These images are often overlapped by creating different layers through different techniques allowing contrast while focusing on the main relationship being presented.
My technique is influence by Sigmar Polk’s juxtapositions, Alice Neel’s painting style, and Johnen Vasquez’s ink drawings.
