For the past five years, singer songwriter Karen Joy Brown has surprised and delighted local fans and media with what the Chico News and Review calls her “deeply soulful voice”. Terre Reynolds of KZFR Face the Music describes her as “having the whole package…..a beautiful voice, can play well, and writes beautiful songs.” But what new listeners invariably attest is that it is almost impossible to hear her sing without being struck by her singular ability to express emotion through her uniquely rich voice. If her mesmerizing vocals deliver poetry that seems to know you, then the guileless folk-funk guitar will make you feel like everything's gonna be alright. With simple, sincere arrangements of originals and “well-chosen covers” ranging from the Police to Patsy Cline, Brown transforms everyday events into stories that enchant, seduce, and inspire.

Brown discovered a love of performing though drama and musicals in her early years, and awakened her passion for songwriting when she picked up her father’s guitar at eighteen. Her music reflects the influence of an eclectic array of bands from Marty Robbins, to the Beatles, to‘70’s rock like the Cars, Tom Petty, and the Who, to Motown, not to mention her guilty, fervent devotion to ’80’s music . Like so many performers, she developed her musical skills in a church setting leading contemporary gospel music for congregations until her increasing desire to share her own songs in a wider setting finally compelled her to leave her post as a high school Spanish teacher and start on a path to a promising future as an independent artist.
After the last two years of a demanding touring/working schedule, Karen will be widening her horizons in Spain starting May 2008 in hopes of developing her ecclectic musical style and gaining the experiences that gift her songwriting with a richness rare in today's music flooded market.
