Birthing

Anna is about to pop!  Any day now I will be a Father to 2 sons.  Anna had a natural child birth the first time around, and she's doing it again because she doesn't really remember the first time.

The first time, we learned that she had a real need for music to get lost in during the harder parts of labor.  We had this amazing midwife that talked her back down when the labor was getting to be too much to handle.  If it wasn't for her, I think she may have gone for the pain killers, not that that's bad, but it just wouldn't have been what she wanted.

Since there was little music available for her that didn't stink of massage-therapist cheese, Coleman ended up being born to the soulful crooning of Marvin Gaye.  I was pretty excited for Coleman, because now he gets to say that he was born to Marvin Gaye, but it didn't help Anna get into her other-worldly birthing zone.

This time around, I have a birthing warrior princess that knows what she wants - and she wants birthing music.  She, of course, commissioned her husband to write this music since she wants son #2 to be able to say that he was born to Daddy's music.  This is a fascinating challenge and it took me waaay out of my typical box.

I had to write something soothing, but motivating, textured and subtle, but with a rythm to hang on to.  It's not easy to write something to get lost in, to make it feel like it's washing over you.  I don't know if I've done it.  But I know that in labor, my harshest and most honest critic will be even more harsh and honest than normal.

If I can pull it off, I'll write more in that spirit.  Ambient music to birth to that isn't cheesy or fluty - for all the natural mommas out there that have the courage to give it a shot without big pharma in the room.  No other creature deserves more reverence.
