Surprising, right?
So I basically hate modern musicals... Even that Beatles musical. Yeah, you heard me. I didn't like that one either.
I just think they're really dumb. If they didn't have music they'd be a lot better.
I saw the remake of Hairspray a little while ago (not voluntarily...) and am gravely sorry that I did so. I don't think the original Hairspray was a musical, and if it was it was probably decent.. Crybaby was decent, too.
I have no appetite for exaggeration and breaking into song; especially if it isn't a good one, and if it's a musical chances are it will be heavily damaging to the soul.
I don't know why I'm writing this.. my friends are watching the Beatles musical in the other room and when I found that out I was like "ah gosh not that movie." Especially since everyone's been going ape over it. I really don't see it, especially if you're as ill educated and unenthused about the Beatles as I am. They did write good songs and had a lot to say.. I mean, they had a significant impact on society throughout the Vietnam era and they probably evolved over the course of their existence more than any other band in history. I have a lot of respect for them, but I have a hard time actually liking their music.. their lyrics are great, but their actual music isn't something I'm all that worked up over.
Surprising, right?
Music as it is now has a lot to owe to the Beatles, but that doesn't really mean I have to like them. They've influenced me a lot indirectly because the music I listen to has been impacted significantly by them, but it's kind of the same thing as when I listened to punk more, but I couldn't stand old UK punk. It put me to sleep. Beatles are kind of like that. They're real pioneers and legends.. it would hard not to acknowledge that, especially if you're a musician, but they themselves never really had an impact on me musically. All I really acknowledge them for is their lyrical genius, but their actual music has never really pulled me in.
Dang, this took quite a turn...

"Art flourishes where there is a sense of adventure, a sense of nothing having been done before, of complete freedom to experiment; but when caution comes in you get repetition, and repetition is the death of art."
